Individual Note: John Bates, b 1598, per his deposition in 1660 that he was 62 years old (Booster No 6, pate 3, 8187-288) lived in Middletown
(Bruton) Parish, will 21 September 1666 (Booster No 6, page 2). Will proved 24 January 1667 York Co, VA book 3, p 165.
Witnesses, George Bates, Robert Cobbs. To codicil, William Winston, George Bates, William Deane. John Bates came to
Virginia 1623/24 in company of Abram Piercey aboard the ship "Southampton". His wife was Elizabeth. The Elizabeth Bates who
died March 30, 1701 could have been this Elizabeth (Bruton Parish Rigister). Children as listed in his will... Anne,
George, Alse, John. mERCHANT AT PIERSAY'S HUNDRED, ON JAMES RIVER, VA, 1624
The first permanent English speaking settlement in America was at Jamestown, VA starting in 1607. What originally began as a business venture of investors looking for wealth in the new world became a royal colony in 1624. Before the King accepted the colony, he ordered a muster or census of people and property. According to the book "Cavaliers and Pioneers" by Nugent, John Bates was on the 1624 muster as an indentured servant to Abram Piercey. He had arrived on the ship "Southampton" in 1623.
There is one school of thought that John, the immigrant, was from Lydd, County Kent, England. In 1992, the Bates Family of Old Virginia Association hired a professional researcher in England but he was not able to pin-point our John, although there were numerous Bates families in that area at the proper time.
In 1655 a John Bates bought land lying at Middle Plantation. We think this was our John Bates and the land was in or near what is now Williamsburg, VA. Whether or not he had additional land is not known. On 4 May 1660 York County records show "John Bates of Middleton Parish in this county, an ancient inhabitant of the colony, being sixty-two years of age and thereby disabled to work as formerly is discharged from ... counties leavies by this court for the future"
John Bates, immigrant, signed his will by mark on 21 September 1666, it was probated 24 Jan 1667 and recorded in Will Book 3 page 165, York County. In it he mentions four children, George, John, Anne and Alice and his wife Elizabeth (we don't know her maiden name). He left a cow to George, Anne, and Alice (probably having provided to them earlier, perhaps upon their marriages). To John he left 2 cows, a calf, a pig, a featherbed and all his land. Everything else was left to Elizabeth and she was executrix. In a codicil, Elizabeth received 3 and a half barrels of corn, George got "my best hat and cloth coat and breeches", John got a hogshead of tobacco and one young horse and had to pay any outstanding debts.

3 children were underage when his will was made, and one born

son George's deposition). Will 6 January 1676. Will proved April
Court 1677. York County, VA, Wife Mary, who married 2nd Edmund
Brewer. She died prior to June Court 1720.
George Bates was a prominent Quaker and lived near Skimemo, VA. The Society of Friends became active in Virginia in his middle years.
Birth date is an estimation and maybe too early. George (2) was 2nd generation Bates in America. His father John (1) was the original immigrant to Jamestown, VA in 1624. George's (2) will was written January 6, 1676 and probated Apr 1677 in York Co. In it he names sons John and James and daughter Mary. A third son, George, was born posthumously. the will named Mary as sole executrix and was witnessed by Wm Lane and James Cooper. George (2) signed by "x".
Mary made a "deed of gift" in April 1677 in her son George (s/Geo 2) of part of the property left to her by his father.
George (2) was known as George Bates of Skemino (location of his home in VA) He belonged to the Society of Friends which began about 1650. The early Bates families were involved in this movement for two or three generations. George (2) and his wife Mary became prominent Quakers and held meetings in their home.

According to Bates Booster (June 1973 issue) John Bates in 1720 petitioned the court for administration on the estate of Mary Brewer, deceased, case referred to next court. Mary had apparently died intestate.

Research: Warwick - York Monthly Meeting Records: In 1698 the Quaker preacher Thomas Story recorded: "At Skimino in York County, at the house of John Bates, we had a meeting appointed, where no meeting had ever been before, and though he was not a Friend by profession, yet very forward to provide seats, saying his house, he feared, would be too small for the meeting, but he had room sufficient in his heart." and at that same meeting "both John Bates and his wife were convinced of the truth and from that time professed the same with us." This John Bates seems to have been a man of substance. In his will he leaves more than 2500 acres of land to his heirs, land in New Kent County and in the county of James City as well as York County, two mills, more than 20 slaves and 540 lbs of silver which he left to his daughters, in addition to money in England and elsewhere. He left a home to his mother, Mary Brewer. Evidently his second wife had died before 25 Dec 1719, when he signed his will, as she was not mentioned in it.
John Bates has to be regarded as a prominent planter and plantation owner in this period of history. His holdings were vast in a relatively good part of Virginia. Although he inherited a portion of his father's land, he enlarged it greatly. Having money invested in England usually denotes a traveler or perhaps a shipper. - pg 101 - " In 1698, at Skimino, Thomas Story convinced John Bates and his family "of the truth" and the BATESES were a power among Virginia Friends for four generations thereafter."
Will probated 16 May 1720, names children John (4), Issac (s/John3) Hannah (d/John3) and Ann (d/John3) Ann may have been the child of John's 2nd wife, Hannah Trudall. Witnesses to the will were John Rogers, Matt Higgins and Saml Holdcraft. The will was signed 25 Dec 1719
John (3) seems to have been a fairly wealthy man. He left over 2500 acres of land located in New Kent, York and James City counties of VA, more than 30 slaves, 2 mills, investments in England and elsewhere, 540 lbs sterling and a home for his mother, Mary Bates Brewer, who had remarried after the death of John's father. John's (3) estate paid "3 lbs sterling to William Markham for schooling of Bates' son Isaac" (VA Will Records, Judith McGhan 1989)
John (3) also mentioned grandsons Flemming, John and Charles Bates but did not identify fheir father.
